Investment Portfolio Director - Managed Portfolio Service (MPS)

£COMPETITIVE plus excellent bonus and benefits

Hybrid working available!

Due to exciting business growth, a leading UK wealth management firm is looking for a Portfolio Director to join its Managed Portfolio service (MPS) team in Liverpool. This is a senior, investment-facing appointment that combines hands-on stewardship of model portfolios with the role of technical investment specialist and lead point of contact for financial advisers.

You will own a well-governed, robust investment process, support the firm’s distribution effort at scale, and communicate with clarity and authority - driving model performance, adviser take-up and long-term client retention. It is a role for an experienced portfolio manager who enjoys being close to both the investment decision-making and the advisers who rely on it.

Duties of the Portfolio Director to include:

  • Investment strategy & model management: Define and implement investment strategies aligned to each model’s risk profile, drawing on the right systems, tools and market knowledge.
  • Governance & documentation: Keep investment process records in good order - asset allocation committee minutes, model change rationales and the regulatory evidence covering suitability, PROD and Consumer Duty.
  • Risk oversight: Monitor and manage investment risk, including volatility, drawdown and tracking-error targets, and keep total cost budgets (ongoing charges plus transaction costs) within agreed limits, with consistency of models maintained across platforms.
  • Platform delivery: Ensure model changes are implemented promptly across the firm’s third-party adviser platforms, working with operations to resolve any exceptions.
  • Market & performance monitoring: Follow markets, economic trends and geopolitical developments; track portfolio performance and rebalance as needed to hold the intended asset allocation.
  • Adviser engagement: Give advisers clear portfolio updates on performance drivers, risk metrics and positioning, and build and deliver training and supporting materials for the proposition.
  • Content & thought leadership: Write market outlooks, thought-leadership pieces and Consumer Duty evidence that links product features to client benefits and outcomes.
  • Proposition development: Capture adviser and market feedback and share it with portfolio managers, product and risk to help evolve the proposition (for example around income, ESG or tax efficiency).
  • Team leadership: Mentor and develop junior colleagues, contribute to - and where appropriate lead - internal committees and projects, and champion a collaborative, standards-led culture.

Requirements for the successful Portfolio Director to include:

  • Significant experience managing portfolios at scale and complexity, ideally within a model portfolio (MPS) environment
  • A Level 7 qualification - Chartered Wealth Manager (CWM) or CFA, with CWM preferred
  • A strong track record in client service and a clear contribution to business performance
  • Confident use of industry systems such as FactSet or Morningstar Direct and FE Analytics
  • The ability to produce clear, insightful investment communications
  • A sound working knowledge of client administration, regulatory compliance and investment risk procedures

What’s in it for you:

  • A senior, investment-facing role with real ownership: a permanent appointment where you shape the models, own the adviser relationship and see the direct impact of your work, with study support and funding for further qualifications.
  • A market-leading benefits package: a non-contributory pension of up to 10%, private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, a company share scheme, discretionary bonus and flexible holidays.
  • Hybrid working and an inclusive culture: a genuine balance between office and home, alongside a people-first culture with social and inclusion networks, volunteering days and a real sense of belonging.
